To understand why stretching impacts your immune system, you must understand your lymphatic system.
Your lymphatic system acts as the body’s sewage system. The lymph system produces cells and antibodies.
Stretching helps to pump lymphatic fluid through your system, flushing wastes and toxins. Infections get filtered out by white blood cells sitting at lymph nodes throughout the body.
Blockages in the lymphatic system can lead to skin problems, fatigue, sleep disorders, stress, fibromyalgia, migraines, arthritis, and digestive issues. Stretching, therefore, helps with all of these issues, as well!
Almost any stretch can help you, though a few specific ones are especially helpful.
Legs on the Wall
- Lay a rolled-up towel under your hips.
- Scoot your butt up against the wall.
- Rest your legs upright against the wall.
- Remain there for at least five minutes.
- Close your eyes and take deep breaths.
The purpose of this stretch is to drain the lymph flow from your legs and feet. It’s especially helpful if you have edema.
Yoga Poses
Almost any yoga pose will help you. They all involve gentle stretching, twisting, and deep breathing.
Leg Swings
- Stand beside a wall or hold onto a support for balance.
- Swing one leg forward and backward, keeping it straight.
- Swing your leg side-to-side.
- Repeat with the other leg.
- Repeat 3 to 5 sets.
