Stretches for Migraine Headaches
Migraines are the worst. It’s not just the skull-splitting throb at your temples. It’s also the nausea, the blurred vision, the aura, the exhaustion, and the partial blindness. All these symptoms can stop you in your tracks, and sometimes medication fails to do anything at all.
Yet there is hope. Did you know that some simple stretches can help you alleviate the pain? Here are a few to try.
Neck Stretches
Neck pain is part of the package for many people with migraines, so stretches targeting the neck can be particularly effective. Here are two you can try.
The Ear-to-Shoulder Stretch
- Gently tilt your head to one side, bringing your ear closer to your shoulder.
- Hold for a few seconds, then repeat on the other side.
- Repeat two to three times.
Neck Rolls
Gently rotate your head from side to side, first in one direction, then the other.
Shoulder Rolls
Shoulder rolls can help loosen up your neck muscles as well.
- Roll your shoulders forward and backward several times.
- Shrug them up to your ears.
- Release.
- Repeat two to three times.
Upper Back Stretch
Release a little more tension from your neck and shoulders with this stretch.
- Interlace your fingers behind your head.
- Gently pull your elbows back.
- Hold and release.
- Repeat two to three times.
Reduce Migraine Pain with Deeper Stretching
While these stretches can help with immediate migraine pain, you may need deeper, more intensive stretching to reduce the number of times you suffer from migraines in any given month.
The stretch therapists at Reach Stretch & Recovery can guide you through stretches that will release even more pressure in your neck, upper back, and shoulders, improving circulation and reducing pressure on your nerves and blood vessels during an attack. Plus, we offer five therapies in one, including CBD, a take-home recovery therapy capable of reducing migraine pain.
